The Maximum Degree & Diameter-Bounded Subgraph and its Applications

چکیده
We introduce the problem of finding the largest subgraph of a given weighted undirected graph (host graph), subject to constraints on the maximum degree and the diameter. We discuss some applications in security, network design and parallel processing, and in connection with the latter we derive some bounds for the order of the largest subgraph in host graphs of practical interest: the mesh and the hypercube. We also present a heuristic strategy to solve the problem, and we prove an approximation ratio for the algorithm. Finally, we provide some experimental results with a variety of host networks, which show that ∗[email protected] †[email protected] ‡[email protected] §[email protected] the algorithm performs better in practice than the prediction provided by our theoretical approximation ratio.

The Maximum Degree-and-Diameter-Bounded Subgraph in the Mesh
The problem of finding the largest connected subgraph of a given undirected host graph, subject to constraints on the maximum degree ∆ and the diameter D, was introduced in [1], as a generalization of the Degree-Diameter Problem. A case of special interest is when the host graph is a common parallel architecture. Here we discuss the case when the host graph is a k-dimensional mesh. We provide s...
متن کاملAn ILP formulation and genetic algorithm for the Maximum Degree-Bounded Connected Subgraph problem
A general instance of a Degree-Constrained Subgraph problem may be found in an edgeweighted or vertex-weighted graph Gwhereas the objective is to find an optimal weighted subgraph, subject to certain degree constraints on the vertices of the subgraph. This class of combinatorial problems has been extensively studied due to its numerous applications in network design. If the input graph is bipar...
متن کاملA Polynomial-Time Algorithm for Computing the Maximum Common Connected Edge Subgraph of Outerplanar Graphs of Bounded Degree
The maximum common connected edge subgraph problem is to find a connected graph with the maximum number of edges that is isomorphic to a subgraph of each of the two input graphs, where it has applications in pattern recognition and chemistry. This paper presents a dynamic programming algorithm for the problem when the two input graphs are outerplanar graphs of a bounded vertex degree, where it ...
متن کاملMaxDDBS problem on butterfly networks
A maximum degree-diameter bounded subgraph problem can be seen as a degree-diameter problem restricted to certain host graphs. In this paper, we investigate the MaxDDBS problem when the host graph is a butterfly network. We give constructive lower bounds for subgraphs of maximum degree 4, 3 and 2. ∗ Was also at Department of Mathematics, University of West Bohemia, Pilsen, Czech Republic. Decea...
متن کاملk-forested choosability of graphs with bounded maximum average degree
A proper vertex coloring of a simple graph is $k$-forested if the graph induced by the vertices of any two color classes is a forest with maximum degree less than $k$. A graph is $k$-forested $q$-choosable if for a given list of $q$ colors associated with each vertex $v$, there exists a $k$-forested coloring of $G$ such that each vertex receives a color from its own list. In this paper, we prov...
